Discovering Your Roots in Elgin:
Chapter 5 Newspapers The Elgin County Library’s collection of newspapers on microfilm consists of the majority of newspapers that were published in the county, and a complete set is available for research at the Elgin County Archives. A collection of Tillsonburg and London newspapers are also housed at the Elgin County Archives. Duplicate copies of pertinent local papers are available at Elgin County Library branches throughout the county. Most St. Thomas newspapers are part of the microfilm collection in the George Thorman Room at the St. Thomas Public Library. The original copies of a large portion of St. Thomas newspapers are stored at the Elgin County Archives for preservation, and are not generally available for research purposes. Elgin OGS volunteers have begun compiling a genealogical index to St. Thomas papers, which will be placed on its website. Some newspapers may be available at other locations such as the National Archives of Canada (Ottawa), the Archives of Ontario (Toronto), and the D. B. Weldon Library, University of Western Ontario (London). Aylmer Express (January 1880 - current ) First called The Aylmer Paper, on January 1, 1880, the name changed to The Aylmer Express. On December 28, 1916, it absorbed the East Elgin Tribune. On October 3, 1918, “with which is incorporated The East Elgin Tribune” was added as a subtitle. On January 19, 1983, this subtitle was dropped and it is known simply as The Aylmer Express. Unfortunately, only fragments remain of The Aylmer Express prior to December 1890. There are also several gaps in the surviving papers, as will be noted in the following list. The Aylmer Express microfilm is available at the Elgin County Archives and the Aylmer Library. Indexing of genealogical material from The Aylmer Express has been completed from 1890 to 1969, in volumes covering five year periods. These indexes are available from the Elgin County Branch OGS, and also in CD format. Below is a list of the microfilm containing The Aylmer Express. St. Thomas Liberal The Liberal advocated “Provincial reform upon British principles” and the “diffusion of general intelligence”. It campaigned against established religious and political authorities and was a strong supporter of William Lyon Mackenzie. Full coverage was given to the sessions of the Provincial Parliament and the editorials were devoted strictly to politics. Reformers were urged to attend political union meetings for concerted action against the Tories. Microfilmed copies are available at St. Thomas Public Library.
