THE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
About a year ago, I attended a genealogy seminar at the Church of Latter Day Saints in St. Thomas. I had been doing my own family roots for about 2 years at that time and decided to attend the meeting to see if I could get some hints for my research. Although I did get some help, I also encountered some frustration. Information about ancestors in Elgin County was hard to get. Many sources were available but, where to find theme At that time, I decided to see if a local branch of O.G.S. could be formed in this area, so that all these resources could be coordinated. I found much positive response to my suggestion but no one was willing to take the steps to set up a local branch. Finally in June 1981, I decided to try. By February 1982, the Elgin County Branch of O.G.S. had become a reality. Many people have helped in making the Elgin County Branch a reality. I would like to thank everyone of them. My hope is that through the Elgin Branch, research in Elgin County will become easier. With everyone working together on all the local projects - indexing of census, transcribing cemeteries, indexing newspapers, etc. - I am sure that everyone will benefit from the Elgin County Branch of O.G.S.
