Extracts of Genealogical information

Chairman’s Message

Our newsletter is being produced a little early this time, to allow you to register for the Regional Meeting hosted by our branch, on April 7 at Central United Church in St. Thomas. More information, along with a registration form, is included in this newsletter. In order to receive lunch with your registration, we need to hear from you by March 24. We have an excellent program lined up and I hope to see many of you there.

We had an executive meeting in January, where many ideas were discussed about publishing, web site content, and future projects. It was decided that in addition to our publications on paper, we will begin to offer some of our material in CD format. More discussion is needed before we decide what information to offer free of charge on our web site.

A committee was formed to investigate the feasibility of microfilming or digitalizing about 10 years’ worth of newspapers, including issues mainly from the 1890's of the St. Thomas Daily Times and the Evening Journal. These issues are not part of the existing microfilm collected, and were thought to be missing. We were made aware recently that they are in storage at the St. Thomas Times-Journal office.

The speaker at our February meeting was Stephen Hale, Land Registrar for Elgin County. During his presentation, he informed us that an agreement between the Land Registry Office and the Elgin-St. Thomas Archives Association regarding transfer of records will be signed very soon. This agreement deals with paper records that were designated for removal from Land Registry Offices, and were consequently saved from destruction by APOLROD (Association for the Preservation of Land Registry Office Documents). The future availability of these records for research is under the jurisdiction of the Elgin-St. Thomas Archives Association.

We have had a number of new faces at our meetings, resulting partially from a series of genealogy courses that Jim Wolfe has been conducting at the St. Thomas Senior’s Centre. I would like to thank Jim for promoting our organization at these courses.

For the March meeting, I will be giving a presentation called “5 Minute Genealogical Gleanings”. In case you are wondering what the actual topic will be, I will be using illustrations and examples pointing to information in records that genealogists sometimes miss, how to interpret records, and tips on finding elusive details. Hope to see you there!

.Jim McCallum
