The first burial in Aylmer Cemetery was that of Donald McLachlan who died in September of 1837 at the age of 43 years. The next 2 burials were the Daughters of Daniel and Elizabeth Davis, - Emmeline and Eleanor who died on December 13, 1838. There were 4 burials in

1849, 18 burials in 1875,26 burials in 1900 and in 1985 there were a total of burials for the year.

The cemetery first consisted of 4 acres, another 3 acres were added later and on September 14th 1869 the sons of Aaron Vanpatter- Joel, Lewis, and George Willard deeded 4 acres of land to the cemetery. On April 25th 1899, Lewis Vanpatter and his Wife Emma Jael deeded

4 1/10 acres to the cemetery. At this time also the trustees were to maintain and build the fences on the lands of the cemetery. No barbed wire fences were to be used.

On March 21st 1923 Charles H. Roberts and his Wife Mabel Eliza deeded 5 acres of land to the cemetery.

On October 20th 1925, Lewis A. Bastedo and his Wife Ina Blanche deeded 4 acres of land to the cemetery.

On October 22nd 1959 Mary Aileen Hambidge - Harold Hambidge

Orchards deeded 8 acres of land to the cemetery. The cemetery now consists of 32 acres of land.

tt In 1901 a well was dug on the northeast corner of the cemetery, with a windmill and tank. Later galvanized piping was installed to supply water throughout the cemetery. In 1928 a steel picket fence was erected across the front of the cemetery. The fence is now a 1/4 mile long. The gates were widened to accomodate the larger vehicles of recent years. A chapel and receiving vault were erected in 1930. A new barn was built in 1955 to replace the original one.

In 1902 each of the plot holders were responsible for the care and maintenance of their own plots. The same year the I.O.O.F lodge took action to improve the care of the cemetery and instituted a decoration day.

In 1911 Mrs. Temperance J. Teeple left a legacy for a fund to provide perpetual care for her plot. This commenced the idea of perpetual care in Aylmer Cemetery.

In 1967 Mr. Fred Kristof / and his family undertook to rewrite all the records and record all the names from every monument and markers as a centennial project. The names have been recored under an a1phabetical and yearly system which makes it easy for any person who whiches to trace their ancestors and to obtain the facts and locations of the graves. Since this has been done there have been many requests for assistance.

In 1984 the Elgin County Genealogical Branch - Ontario Genealogical , Society obtained a student grant from the Ontario Government to have a group of students record all the information of / all the monuments and markers.

Aylmer is indeed fortunate to have such a fine well cared for Cemetery.
