Chapter 2

Place Names in Elgin County

                Elgin County has many former communities and hamlets which no longer exist.  The following list was taken from Sims’ History of Elgin County.  The locations have been added to the best of our ability.  In many cases, nothing remains to indicate that a settlement ever existed at that location.  Recently, the 911 road and line naming system has replaced the concession numbering.  Therefore we have attempted to add the name of the road or line on which the community is or was located.  In some cases, a community was known by more than one name at different times.  These additional names appear in brackets in the Alphabetical list only.

                This chapter is divided into two sections.  An alphabetical list of place names with the corresponding township is given first; then a listing by township giving the location.
